After a decade of taking the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series too seriously, the 2020 release brought back the fun and charm of the cult JRPG series from Square Enix. Working on the remake and its sequel, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, helped Square Enix rediscover what fans loved about this franchise in the first place.
In an interview with the Japanese publication Denfaminico Gamer, the developers of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth revealed that working on the new games helped the company realize the strengths of the classic FF games. After Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XV were seen as failures by the community, the developers felt the need to search for the spirit of the series, the true strengths of the franchise.
When creating Final Fantasy games, from Famicom (NES) to PlayStation, we added the strangest elements simply because we wanted to, – says long-time producer Yoshinori Kitase. Now, with more powerful hardware and realistic graphics, it’s harder to insert crazy ideas like we did in the past.
However, by incorporating some of the cuter and more amusing ideas from Final Fantasy 7, such as Cloud’s dressing segment or the dating scenes in the “Gold Saucer,” the team realized that it wasn’t necessary to eliminate all the interesting elements from the series.
When creating this remake, we added quirks to the game that we believe belong to the old times, while showcasing a realistic world, – Kitase continued. In my opinion, by maintaining a balance between “realism” and “playfulness,” we preserve the “spirit of FF7″… It can be said that if we focused solely on realism in creating the remake, we would have ultimately left out many silly elements… We maintain the “fun atmosphere of FF7.”
However, the uniqueness of FF7 did not change the plans to create new installments. For example, the latest installment in the series, Final Fantasy XVI, compared to the original, still makes the series more serious and more western.
As hardware becomes more advanced and development time takes more and more time, I still believe that “FF is a game that has everything,” – says creative director Tetsuya Nomura. We are creating this remake, striving to “put everything” into it, like in the good old days. This is only possible because we have the original FF7 as a foundation for development.
In other words, the developers added what they wanted to the game and were able to do so because they had the original FF7 as a starting point. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is not just a remake of the original game’s plot, but also the second part of a new approach to storytelling. After completing the first part, significant changes are likely to occur in the second part, including the introduction of the chapter with Zack Fair.
In the meantime, it is worth noting that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be released on February 29, 2024, as a timed exclusive for PlayStation 5.
