According to new testimony in the ongoing Epic v. Google trial, Spotify has reached a special agreement with Google that allows it to avoid paying any commission to Google when users sign up for subscriptions using Spotify’s own payment system on Android. The Verge first reported this news. As part of the same deal, Spotify only paid Google a four percent commission if users signed up for the service through Google, which is significantly lower than the typical 15 percent commission that most other apps pay for subscriptions through the Google Play Store.
In court, Google’s partnerships head, Don Harrison, reportedly stated, “Listening to music is one of [the phone’s] core purposes… if we don’t have Spotify working properly across Play services and core services, people will not buy Android phones.” Both Google and Spotify also agreed to contribute $50 million each to a “success fund” as part of the deal.
