In February 2021, CD Projekt RED company was targeted by a large-scale hacker attack. The hackers successfully breached the developers’ servers and stole valuable data, amounting to nearly 100 GB, related to various studio projects. The most significant concern at the time was the leak of the source code for Cyberpunk 2077, which, surprisingly, continues to this day. Users have noticed that an anonymous group of enthusiasts consistently updates the leaked game build by adding files with the current version of the game.
Currently, the entire source code for Cyberpunk 2077 is hosted on the Codeberg platform under the username adamsmasher. The uploaded files encompass all game versions, starting from the initial release build and extending to the latest one – after update 2.0. While the leak of the source code for earlier game versions can be attributed to CD Projekt RED’s breach, the origin of the data for the current version remains a mystery.
Interested individuals can access the repository and examine the decrypted game data. Enthusiasts have pointed out that in version 2.0, the developers began providing more frequent and detailed descriptions of the game code, which impacts certain mechanics, character behavior, and other elements.
This leak exposes enthusiasts to a highly detailed description of the engine utilized in Cyberpunk 2077. Additionally, it contains information about the functioning of artificial intelligence, driving mechanics, and more. This can prove valuable for the creation of extensive modifications for the game; however, CD Projekt RED will no longer support this engine. The developers are transitioning to the Unreal Engine for their upcoming projects.
