Sony’s CEO affirms that story-driven games will continue to be the cornerstone of PlayStation.

In recent years, ⁤Sony has⁤ been actively expanding its efforts in‌ the⁤ streaming field, and along with games like Concord and⁣ Fairgame$, the company has also started⁣ revealing some of‍ the games that are ⁣currently in development.‌ And while ⁣some were concerned that this would⁤ mean a decrease in attention to the narrative experience, which‍ has become synonymous with PlayStation’s ⁢main games, ‌Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan stated that this is not⁣ the case.

His quotes ‌are taken‌ from a Q&A session with analysts in‌ 2022, ⁣which‍ became known as ⁣a result of⁢ the recent leak of Microsoft court documents. When asked‌ if Sony’s plans to‌ double its revenue from third-party game developers depend entirely on 10 games that‍ the company ⁢is set to release by April 2026 ‌(the number of⁤ releases⁢ increased ⁤to 12 for the⁢ same period after this specific Q&A⁤ session), Ryan responded that Sony does not expect⁤ all of ⁣these releases⁤ to be successful, although ‍whether ⁤they will be ⁤considered successful will also vary from game to game. He then ⁤added that the company will continue to publish “narratively rich”‍ games for which it has become⁢ known, which, in‍ his⁤ words, will remain the “foundation” of PlayStation’s ⁣main games.

“It would⁢ be naive to assume that all 10 projects will⁣ achieve huge success,‍ so it ⁢is not a⁤ necessary⁤ condition,” Ryan said.⁢ “That is certainly not what we are expecting. Obviously, the difference between success and failure is not binary. And ⁤don’t forget that, while ‌doing this, we will continue to publish games that have served us well for ⁤many years.‍ These single-player, graphically stunning, storytelling-intensive ⁣games will continue to be the foundation of our publishing business.”

Of course, this ‍is not the first time PlayStation’s leadership has made similar statements. Back in March of last year, Head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst stated that Sony studios will “always ⁣continue to create single-player, narrative-based games.”
