In recent years, Sony has been actively expanding its efforts in the streaming field, and along with games like Concord and Fairgame$, the company has also started revealing some of the games that are currently in development. And while some were concerned that this would mean a decrease in attention to the narrative experience, which has become synonymous with PlayStation’s main games, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan stated that this is not the case.
His quotes are taken from a Q&A session with analysts in 2022, which became known as a result of the recent leak of Microsoft court documents. When asked if Sony’s plans to double its revenue from third-party game developers depend entirely on 10 games that the company is set to release by April 2026 (the number of releases increased to 12 for the same period after this specific Q&A session), Ryan responded that Sony does not expect all of these releases to be successful, although whether they will be considered successful will also vary from game to game. He then added that the company will continue to publish “narratively rich” games for which it has become known, which, in his words, will remain the “foundation” of PlayStation’s main games.
“It would be naive to assume that all 10 projects will achieve huge success, so it is not a necessary condition,” Ryan said. “That is certainly not what we are expecting. Obviously, the difference between success and failure is not binary. And don’t forget that, while doing this, we will continue to publish games that have served us well for many years. These single-player, graphically stunning, storytelling-intensive games will continue to be the foundation of our publishing business.”
Of course, this is not the first time PlayStation’s leadership has made similar statements. Back in March of last year, Head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst stated that Sony studios will “always continue to create single-player, narrative-based games.”
