Slitterhead Poses a Serious Threat to Silent Hill 2 Remake

The Silent Hill 2 remake has all the advantages of a stone-cold horror game classic behind it, but Slitterhead, from the original creator of Silent Hill, stands a solid chance of stealing the spotlight. The new incarnation of Silent Hill 2 is being developed by Bloober Team, the studio behind modern horror hits like Layers of Fear and Observer. Although this pedigree will likely appeal to many fans of these games, not everyone has complete confidence that Bloober is going to pull off the gargantuan task of re-imagining a genre centerpiece.

One primary cause for concern comes from recent remarks made by Bloober Team on the Silent Hill 2 remake, which established that the studio is moving away from a focus on developing psychological horror and toward mass-market appeal. Considering how much of Silent Hill 2’s efficacy came from subtle atmospheric elements and unsettling implications, the connotation that Bloober is prioritizing the action gameplay has made many fans worried. It’s difficult to be certain about how much Bloober really plans to stray from the game’s psychological elements until more of the team’s work is shown, but the current outlook is a little fraught.

A new dev diary from Bokeh Game Studio (via YouTube), the team behind Slitterhead, showcases brief glimpses at gameplay that make the title’s roots in PS2-era horror clear. Uniquely grotesque enemy designs recall the particular discomfort of many Silent Hill creatures, and a snatch of action as a playable dog highlights an aspect of experimentation that could shift the feeling of gameplay.

Despite some of the footage lacking any environmental assets or polished UI, the promising nature of the material manages to shine through. Slitterhead hasn’t yet revealed enough to make its overall scope clear, but the crumbs that have been offered could easily catch the eye of Silent Hill fans unsure about the prospects of the Silent Hill 2 remake.

Like the Silent Hill 2 remake, Slitterhead may still not be the perfect answer for fans of Silent Hill’s methodical atmosphere. The game clearly exhibits its own heightened action focus, just one that draws more from the Parasite Eve games and creator Keiichiro Toyama’s own Gravity Rush than from the sources that Bloober Team is more likely to look to. If Slitterhead can successfully weave in the psychological horror that Toyama first mastered with Silent Hill, it could still go toe-to-toe with the Silent Hill 2 remake as an action horror game and stand a solid chance of emerging the victor.
