A new bill targeting TikTok is on the verge of being enacted. The Senate has given the green light to a measure that compels ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a potential ban, with a vote of 79 - 18. Dubbed the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act,” the bill is now on its way to President Joe Biden for final approval.
Unlike previous attempts to restrict or force divestment from the popular social media platform, this bill has garnered significant bipartisan support. Introduced in March, it swiftly passed through the House of Representatives with strong agreement from both sides of the aisle. A revised version was recently included in a broader foreign aid legislation package.
According to the updated terms, TikTok will be given a grace period of up to 12 months to sever ties with its parent company ByteDance, failing which it could be removed from US app stores and web hosting services. ByteDance has criticized the bill as unconstitutional and hinted at a potential legal battle against such legislation.
