The extensive loot system in Diablo 4 has shown players that their gear changes fairly often due to the sheer abundance of loot in the game, with transmog options available when salvaging these items to keep a favorite appearance. As the player’s character levels up, the rarity of the gear found increases as well, leading to the discovery of unique loot appearances for weapons, armor, and other accessories. Similar to how players can change the visuals related to their character’s body, gear can also be altered to match a preferred aesthetic.
When players get started in Diablo 4, they will have no access to gear modification until completing the Prologue and reaching Kyovashad. In this city, multiple vendors sell new gear, but players will want to head over to the Wardrobe close to the waypoint to get started with the transmog system. Indicated by an icon resembling a dresser of sorts, the Wardrobe sits right above the Weapon and Armor Vendors on the second floor of their establishment. Although players won’t have any new options to change gear appearance, they can enable an unequipped look if they desire.
The Blacksmith, or any Blacksmith vendor depicted by a pickaxe icon on the player’s map, can salvage gear for additional appearances. Regardless of the stats or skill point abilities in Diablo 4 related to a gear piece, players can recover the item, destroying it in exchange for raw materials and a new appearance that can apply to any other item of the same type.
For example, if players have a helmet with a look they haven’t seen before, a pickaxe icon will show above it in their inventory, indicating that salvaging the item would unlock a fresh transmog option in the Wardrobe.
Breaking a piece of gear through salvaging gets rid of it forever, so players should remember what items they choose to destroy beforehand. Once the gear has been salvaged, any current equipment may be changed to match that item’s look as a purely cosmetic change. Those with upgraded items that far outclass gear picked up from a dungeon or world event might wish to salvage and transmog their equipment, as the character and classes of Diablo 4 have a plethora of distinct looks that encourage experimentation.
