Russia’s parliament is considering a new law that would allow for the confiscation of money, valuables, and other property from individuals who are found to be spreading “deliberately false information” about Moscow’s military actions. Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of the State Duma, announced on Saturday that a bill has been developed to target those who are tarnishing Russia’s reputation and its soldiers’ involvement in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The proposed legislation, which will be presented to the Duma on Monday, aims to punish individuals who are inciting extremist activities or advocating for sanctions against Russia. It also seeks to penalize those who are discrediting the armed forces, a criminal offense under a law enacted as part of Moscow’s crackdown on dissent following its military intervention in Ukraine in February 2022. Offenders could also be stripped of any honorary titles. This controversial move has sparked widespread concern and debate.
