Sega Sammy has completed its purchase of Angry Birds developer Rovio, officially spending $776 million to acquire the company. The deal was initially proposed in April, but both companies had to go through finalization and regulatory processes. Sega hopes that this acquisition will strengthen its presence in the mobile space, even though the peak popularity of Angry Birds was almost 15 years ago.
However, Rovio is not solely focused on Angry Birds. In addition to the various spinoff games of Angry Birds, the company is also known for the match-three puzzler Sugar Blast and the narrative mystery game Small Town Murders. While these may not be highly recognized intellectual properties, Sega gains more than just well-known franchise titles through this purchase. It obtains a pre-existing infrastructure for developing, publishing, and advertising mobile games. This means that Sega can quickly start creating mobile titles based on its own intellectual properties, such as Sonic, Samba de Amigo, Persona, Football Manager, and others….
