Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has officially suspended his campaign for the Republican US presidential nomination just ahead of the New Hampshire primary. Instead, he has thrown his support behind Donald Trump, effectively ending his own White House aspirations. This decision comes after DeSantis failed to gain the traction needed to position himself as a serious contender against the former president.
In a video posted on X, DeSantis acknowledged that the majority of Republican primary voters are in favor of giving Donald Trump another chance. This move comes just before the New Hampshire primary, which is set to take place on Tuesday.
DeSantis took a swipe at his closest rival, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, criticizing her as a representation of the “old Republican guard of yesteryear.” He expressed that Republicans cannot afford to revert to a “warmed-over corporatism” that Haley represents.
When DeSantis initially entered the 2024 presidential race, he appeared to have a strong position to challenge Trump. He had significant financial backing, with a political fortune exceeding $100 million, and a notable legislative record on conservative issues such as abortion and education.
