It’s always great to see companies providing updates and new features to devices even after their initial launch. Roland’s TR-8S and TR-6S were already quite capable, but with the latest firmware updates, they are gaining two significant additions, one of which I am personally very excited about.
TR-8S 3.0 and TR-6S 2.0 introduce an ACB model of the CR-78 CompuRhythm and a chromatic TR-808 mode for creating basslines. The ability to play an 808 kick chromatically greatly enhances the versatility of these two drum machines. While it was possible to tune drum hits and samples to create some melodic elements, it was not an easy or enjoyable experience. This update expands the capabilities of the 8S and 6S beyond just percussion, but in a way that feels natural. The 808 emulation was already included in their feature sets, and it is a staple for creating basslines, not just drum grooves, especially in the world of hip hop.
