NEW YORK CITY — On a recent weekend in downtown Manhattan, a long line of families with strollers and small children gathered to enter Target’s ”Wonderland”
Santa’s helpers distributed complimentary cookies. Mario and Luigi from Nintendo’s “Super Mario” video game posed for pictures. A toy train weaved through a miniature village created from the retailer’s gingerbread kits. And children gazed in awe at some of the season’s most popular toys, including a large Barbie Dreamhouse.
Getting people to attend was one thing. Transforming the event into a sale is an entirely different challenge.
