In the ceremony of the Fear Fest Horror Game Awards 2023, the best horror games were named. This annual event, hosted by Feardemic in Krakow, Poland, aims to reward the most deserving representatives of the horror game genre. In 13 categories – from heavy hitters like the remakes of Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space, to indie newcomers like Signalis – a fierce competition unfolded.
Among all the competitors, one clear winner stood out: the remake of Resident Evil 4 – it took home the majority of the awards, here is the full list of awards for Resident Evil 4 Remake at The Horror Game Awards 2023:
Best performance (Nick Apostolides)
Best soundtrack
Best game design
Best character (Leon S. Kennedy)
Horror game of the year
An honorable mention, corresponding to the aforementioned, was given to Resident Evil Village VR in the category “Best VR/AR”, taking the title from its nominees – Afterlife VR, Propagation: Paradise Hotel, The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR, and The Walking Dead Saints and Sinners (Chapter 2): Retribution.
The winners in other categories are presented below:
Best sound design:
Here Dead Space emerged as the winner, making players look over their shoulders at every step.
Best trailer:
Silent Hill 2 returned and became even more terrifying than before, earning the prize for its chilling trailer.
Best multiplayer game:
For those who enjoy having fun with friends – Outlast Trials.
Best story:
The compelling story of Signalis earned it the highest rating.
Best indie horror:
Signalis once again emerged victorious.
Best art design:
Scorn received this award for its unconventional visual design.
Lifetime achievement award:
Mikael Hedberg, known for his work on games like Alone in the Dark, Amnesia: Rebirth, and SOMA, was honored with a lifetime achievement award.
Undoubtedly, there will be much discussion surrounding the fact that the (fantastic) remake of a 2005 game completely outshined its (mostly) modern competitors and what this means for the genre and the industry as a whole.
Furthermore, if we consider Silent Hill 2 and the remake of Dead Space (excluding the lifetime achievement award for Mikael Hedberg, who is currently working on a new Alone in The Dark), a total of 7 out of 11 awards were won by remakes of classic horror games. Will there be even more remakes of classics in the future, as studios and publishers strive to get their piece of the pie, and will this come at the expense of developers taking a risk on new IPs? Only time will tell.
