It’s truly astonishing how much outdated technology is still in use today. The fact that we are still relying on it is both impressive and concerning.
Can you believe it has been a whole decade since Windows XP support ended? Despite this, there are still individuals out there who are clinging onto XP for dear life. It’s mind-boggling!
There are reports that even NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center is running on old systems with Windows XP Embedded (XPe). The reason? Manufacturers have not updated the systems, and the cost of replacing them is astronomical.
It’s not surprising to hear this. I remember working at Goddard in the late 1980s and dealing with ancient technology. We had a 110-baud Telex line to Bermuda from the 1950s for Shuttle data communication. It was a miracle that it still functioned.
NASA has always struggled with budget constraints, dating back to the Apollo moon landings era. The lack of adequate funding has forced them to make do with outdated technology.
But I’m getting off track here.
