A new version of Red Dead Redemption has finally been announced by Rockstar Games. A remake or remaster of Rockstar’s 2010 Western title has been rumored for years, and although the studio seemed to cancel it when moving its resources into developing GTA 6, speculation picked up again when a new Korean rating for the game was published in June 2023.
Rockstar Games confirmed today that a “new conversion” Red Dead Redemption with Undead Nightmare will be releasing August 17, 2023, on Switch, PS4, and Xbox. The title is not being billed as an official remaster, now being referred to as ”Red Dead Redemption (Rockstar Presents Ver)” on the official Rockstar website, and while the original box art for Red Dead Redemption and its sequel also sported the “Rockstar Games Presents” title, the fact it’s stated as a new version indicates that this could be a new series of remasters or remakes coming from the studio.
Over the years, the original Red Dead Redemption has been harder to come by. Unlike its sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, RDR never received a PC release, and then modern PlayStation users were suddenly deprived of access to the title when it was pulled from the new PlayStation Plus with no prior warning in October 2022. It is currently only officially accessible on its original PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms, and via Xbox’s backwards compatibility, so this remaster should finally make the acclaimed story of John Marston available to a wider modern audience.
In the 13 years since Red Dead Redemption’s original launch, there have been several improvements in gaming with more powerful, enhanced hardware allowing games to have more fidelity, better real-time lighting, and shorter loading speeds. This was evident with the jump in 8 years between Red Dead Redemption and its sequel, which had far superior graphics and a more rich, lived-in world than its already impressive predecessor even on the PS4 and Xbox One, with improved gameplay mechanics that could be implemented into the new version of RDR. Releasing with Undead Nightmare included is also a big selling point.
With Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption coming to even more enhanced consoles with the PS5 and Xbox Series X, John Marston’s heartbreaking tale should look better than ever. Considering August 17 is right around the corner, it won’t be long before players can get their hands on this new-and-improved version of Rockstar’s acclaimed Western classic.
