Razer has agreed to pay a hefty sum of over $1.1 million to the Federal Trade Commission to settle allegations that it falsely marketed its Zephyr masks as N95-grade without proper certification. The tech company launched the Zephyr mask, featuring RGB lighting, amidst the pandemic peak. Months later, it unveiled a “Pro” version with added voice enhancement. Initially, Razer claimed the Zephyr was on par with N95 masks, but later retracted this statement and removed all mentions of “N95-grade” filters from its promotional materials upon discovering the lack of certification.
Reportedly, Razer failed to subject the Zephyr masks to testing by the FDA or NIOSH, the official certifying body for masks filtering 95 percent of airborne particles. This incident has tarnished Razer’s reputation among consumers and raised concerns about the company’s credibility.
