Ranking Zelda’s 10 Toughest Non-Boss Enemies: Tears of the Kingdom

While The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is home to a variety of challenging bosses, much of the game’s difficulty actually stems from its normal enemies. Whereas players might expect a challenging fight from large bosses with screen-wide health bars, TOTK’s normal enemies can come as more of a surprise – especially in the early game, when players are liable to be taken out in a single hit by any enemy even slightly above their strength level.

As a sequel to Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom takes steps to address one of the first game’s biggest failings – enemy variety. While most of BOTW’s enemies are still present in TOTK, the game also has a number of entirely new foes for players to face, ranging from re-imagined iterations of classic Zelda creatures to entirely new additions. Even some of BOTW’s returning enemies, such as Bokoblins and Moblins, have some new twists and additional moves that can catch players off guard.

Returning from Breath of the Wild, Lizalfos can be generally tricky to fight, retaining their fast movement and gaining a new slashing horn attack to throw returning players off. Special mention, however, goes to the Electric Lizalfos, whose shocking attacks can make Link drop metal weapons and shields, and become even more threatening in rain or wet environments, which give them a large electrical field. Moreover, unlike fire or ice versions, Electric Lizalfos can’t be defeated a single hit by an arrow or weapon of the opposing element, making them generally harder to deal with.

Another returning enemy from Breath of the Wild, Moblins remain mostly similar to their previous iterations, being a step up from the smaller Bokoblins. However, their new horn attacks in TOTK make them more of a threat, and they retain the ability to throw objects or other, smaller enemies at players. Especially in group fights, Moblins can quickly become hard to deal with, not helped by their health values ballooning as Black or Silver variants begin to appear in the world.

A new addition to TOTK’s roster of enemies, Horriblins are encountered mostly in caves, and be can tricky to deal with in a few different ways. They typically cling to the ceilings of whatever cave they’re found in, which can keep them outside the reach of a player’s weapons. Additionally, Horriblins will often come equipped with fused weapons – most commonly double spears, giving them incredibly long reach and allowing their attacks to catch players off guard. In the early game, or once Silver variants start to appear, Horriblins can shave several hearts off of Link’s life from a great distance.
