The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom features quests that send Link to different regions to investigate strange occurrences affecting the inhabitants. Similar to Breath of the Wild, Link receives assistance from a character in each region, which grants him new abilities. In Tears of the Kingdom, these abilities are obtained through the “Regional Phenomena” main quests, each with its own unique atmosphere.
The main quests in Tears of the Kingdom revolve around the branching stories of the “Regional Phenomena” questline. Link is tasked with investigating the unusual events happening in the home regions of the Rito, Zora, Gerudo, and Goron. These quests ultimately lead to Link awakening the Sages, whose ancestors pledged to pass on their power to aid him in defeating Ganondorf in the distant future. While all the Regional Phenomena quests are enjoyable, some offer a more compelling story with fewer environmental obstacles.
The Goron “Regional Phenomena” questline in Tears of the Kingdom stands out for its humor. Due to its proximity to Death Mountain, players will need heat-resistant armor for Link, which can be purchased in Goron City. Early in the questline, it becomes apparent that the Gorons’ obsession with Marbled Rock Roast is not benefiting them. Even Yunobo, a Goron character, is acting strangely and promoting the consumption of this peculiar food because “Princess Zelda” instructed him to wear a mask and eat it.
Link frees Yunobo from the controlling mask and together they search for the image of Princess Zelda, which leads them to the entrance of the Fire Temple on Death Mountain. Overall, the storyline of the Goron questline may feel underwhelming compared to the other “Regional Phenomena” quests. However, the highlight of this questline is the Fire Temple itself, which incorporates the use of mine carts, fitting for the Goron race and providing an enjoyable and unique design compared to the other temples in Tears of the Kingdom.
The Rito “Regional Phenomena” quest embodies a coming-of-age story. In Tears of the Kingdom, the Rito struggle with the perpetual cold and snow caused by the Upheaval. Tulin believes that the snowfall is connected to a ship hidden in the clouds, a legend passed down among the Rito as a children’s tale. Despite the skepticism of the other Rito, Tulin is granted permission to investigate the clouds.
