Baldur’s Gate 3 offers players the chance to set out on adventures with a party of companions. Each companion has their likes and dislikes to create multifaceted, realistic people for players to interact with and even romance. With 10 possible companions but only three spots available when choosing a party, players will have to make some tough decisions when setting out on missions.
Companions play a key role in CRPGs, with series such as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Dragon Age using them to help tell the engaging and compelling stories the genre is known for. With Baldur’s Gate 3, the player’s companions join them on their journey to unravel the mystery of the mind flayer tadpoles and the strange new cult of the Absolute. With party composition playing such an important part in Baldur’s Gate 3, players will need to weigh not only who they like more but who is the most useful in any potential encounters, with each companion having their own skills and unique class features.
Found early on in the Druid Grove, Wyll is known as the Blade of Frontiers with a mission to help those in need throughout Faerûn. Available to play as one of the origin characters, Wyll has been significantly overhauled since early access for the better, with his backstory now feeling more coherent and compelling.
In combat, Wyll is a pact of the fiend warlock, which can feel a little hit-and-miss as he’s not as strong as other melee fighters available, and his spellcasting can feel lacking compared to Gale. While he is somewhat useful early on, Wyll’s inability to hit the broad side of a barn with an Eldritch Blast has become somewhat of a running joke with Baldur’s Gate 3 players.
Karlach is one of the companions that was promoted from a basic NPC and fleshed out more for the final Baldur’s Gate 3 release. Players will be pointed to Karlach by Wyll, and she can be found on the Risen Road northeast of the Blighted Village. Forced to fight in Avernus in the Blood War, Karlach is wonderfully joyful about being back on the Sword Coast and has some genuinely adorable moments. As a barbarian, she is a fantastic tank; however lacks the versatility of other melee companions, and how much a player would take her on missions depends very much on party composition.
