The Star Wars KOTOR remake is facing difficulties in its development. So far, only a brief teaser trailer has been released, providing little information about the game. The project was then taken away from the previous developer, Aspyr, due to concerns about the slow progress. Now, after a year without any updates on KOTOR Remake – except for the announcement trailer being removed by Sony – many fear that the game has been postponed indefinitely.
Adding to the concerns, Embracer Group and Saber have not addressed the rumors of the game’s cancellation. The studios have not even confirmed to the public that the game is still in development, which adds to the troubled history of the remake.
Insider Gaming journalist Mike Straw confirmed that both companies have declined to comment on the cancellation concerns surrounding KOTOR, maintaining their policy of silence regarding the project.
This is not the first time that companies have chosen not to comment on this issue. In May, when there were rumors that the remake might not be released at all, Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors avoided answering an investor’s question about the current status of the KOTOR remake. This further fueled concerns that the game may never see the light of day, similar to the recent events involving the removal of the trailer from the PlayStation YouTube channel.
Interestingly, Sony was willing to provide comments on this matter, stating that the removal of the trailer does not necessarily indicate a postponement of the game. Instead, the company explained that the removal was due to the expiration of the music license used in the trailer. This is certainly peculiar, considering that licensed music is commonly used in trailers. However, at least Sony is willing to address questions about the remake, while Embracer and Saber remain silent.
Unfortunately, given Embracer’s recent actions, the cancellation of the game would not come as a surprise. In the past few weeks, Embracer has conducted significant layoffs in many of its owned studios, including Gearbox and Crystal Dynamics. It has also completely shut down Volition, abruptly ending its 30-year presence in the industry. Considering these developments, Embracer is clearly focused on cost-cutting, and abandoning a single-player game without a release window would likely be an attractive move for the company’s executives.
In any case, even if the game is not canceled, the release date for the KOTOR remake remains unknown. We do know that it will be exclusive to the PS5 console, but apart from that, it remains a mystery.
