Producer James Cameron has confirmed that “Alita: Battle Angel 2” and a third film are in production. The 2019 film, “Alita: Battle Angel,” directed by Robert Rodriguez, was based on the Japanese manga series Gunnm (Battle Angel Alita) by Yukito Kishiro. While the film received positive reviews and had some success at the box office, the sequels have yet to be made.
In a recent interview with Forbes, Cameron mentioned that a sequel to “Alita: Battle Angel” is being developed. However, he did not provide any specific details or timelines. It is speculated that the development will take place during breaks from working on the remaining three “Avatar” sequels. Cameron’s full comment is as follows:
“I’m working on ‘Avatar’ in Wellington and Los Angeles. And I’ll be working on the new ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ films in Austin, so it just didn’t make sense for us.”
Earlier this year, Rodriguez revealed that Cameron had outlined the overall plotlines for the second and third “Alita: Battle Angel” films. Since then, there have been reports of stars and creative personnel expressing their readiness to return for the new film. It is important to note that Disney has not made any official statements regarding new “Alita: Battle Angel” films, despite Cameron’s comments.
The delay in the production of “Alita: Battle Angel” can be attributed to the fact that while the first film broke even at the box office, it did not become a major hit, earning $405 million. The subsequent acquisition of 20th Century Studios by Disney further complicated the situation. However, the film has gained a cult following and there is ongoing enthusiasm from both audiences and stars for its continuation. Additionally, Cameron’s recent success with “Avatar: The Way of Water” adds credibility to these statements.
