Kitsune Tails is an upcoming platforming game designed in a retro 8-bit style that features a wholesome story of love and war. The game has been in development by Kitsune Games for a couple of years now and, along with publisher MidBoss, is set to be released in the first half of 2024. In Kitsune Tails, the main protagonist, Yuzu, is a young kitsune with purple fox-like ears and a bushy tail who must run and jump her way through a world of dangers to save her love interest from the forces of evil.
The version of Kitsune Tails that was played for this preview is an early build copy that still has a ways to go before it is finalized completely. It was missing things such as voice acting, which will greatly add to the quality of the game, and there were many issues with controls not being as smooth as they could be. Hopefully, these problems will be addressed before the full launch of Kitsune Tails next year. Despite its limitations as a preview build, the game still showed off a lot of its fun characteristics and storytelling.
Kitsune Tails clearly draws its inspiration from classic side-scrolling platform games like Super Mario Bros. and does so in a bright and cheerful way. Basic gameplay mechanics are pretty straightforward, with coins to collect, breakable blocks to hit, and power-ups to find. In this early version, there are two ability-granting outfits that Yuzu can use: a spinning top that destroys blocks underneath her, and a snowy fox that freezes enemies. Images on the game’s Steam page show that there will also be a shark outfit, as well as a large bouncing boot that is stolen from some of the enemies. The levels are all fairly simple and nothing stands out as being new from what has been done in other games, yet it is well-made and bright and cheerful.
The story to Kitsune Tails is a precious and wholesome one that feels as though it could be the plot of a romantic anime. Yuzu is a messenger whose story begins when she is delivering her very first message. A kind, human sorceress named Akko helps Yuzu out of a bad situation and a romance soon blossoms between the two. Unfortunately, Yuzu’s childhood friend Kiri becomes jealous and kidnaps Akko, sealing her up in an elemental prison. In order to save Akko, Yuzu crosses worlds and faces off with dangerous monsters all in the name of love.
Along Yuzu’s journey, the player can slowly uncover a deeper story that showcases the complicated relationship with Kiri, and the motivations behind her actions. The entire story for Kitsune Tails is well-crafted and sweet. The concept is just deep enough without becoming too heavy for such a light and cheerful platforming adventure game. It can easily be classified as a cute cozy game with its cheerful graphics and thoughtful storytelling.
