As is the case with nearly all major AAA releases, Bethesda’s space ARPG, Starfield will receive a plethora of additional content included in the pre-order bonuses and several special editions for those who purchase the game. Starfield will also be following the pattern of other new Xbox first-party releases, with the title’s base game being made available from day one as part of the Xbox and PC Game Pass subscription.
The 45-minute-long Starfield Direct event directly followed the June 2023 Xbox Games Showcase and granted players an in-depth look at the highly anticipated title, providing more information about its world, story, and gameplay elements. Bethesda’s upcoming space epic will explore The Settled Systems, an area approximately 50 light-years out from the Solar System during a conflict called the Colony War. Players will be able to fully customizable their character and embark on their exploration missions in a completely buildable ship called The Frontier. Many of Starfield’s bonus perks lean heavily into this level of customization, with a variety of in-game skins for items on offer across all editions of the game.
Starfield’s Digital Premium Edition includes a digital copy of the base game, alongside a new story expansion “Shattered Space”, which will be available to players upon the game’s September 6 release and will hopefully follow in the footsteps of Bethesda’s other well-received story expansions, such as Fallout 3’s “The Pit”, or Oblivion’s “The Shivering Isles”. This edition also includes a new Constellation skin pack, which will be available for the Equinox Laser Rifle, as well as the player’s spacesuit, helmet, and boost pack.
The Digital Premium Edition will also come with a digital Starfield artbook which includes early concept art of the game, as well as the game’s original soundtrack by the award-winning composer Inon Zur, who previously worked on major game franchises such as Fallout, Dragon Age, and Prince of Persia. Players will also be able to upgrade from the digital Standard Edition to the Premium Edition to receive this additional content at a later date.
Those who have purchased Starfield’s Standard Edition on physical media also don’t need to worry about missing out on the Premium Edition’s content, as it will be available via an upgrade. On top of the aforementioned digital content, Starfield’s physical Premium Edition upgrade also comes with a Steelbook display case and a Constellation patch. Players will be able to purchase the Premium Edition upgrade from both the Microsoft and Xbox storefronts and all participating retailers.
