DLC for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom could reunite players with both a missing Breath of the Wild character and one of its newer Rito figures. The world of Hyrule is full of characters old and new in TOTK. Despite this, however, not every notable figure from Breath of the Wild has returned for its sequel title.
Kass is a prominent figure in Breath of the Wild. The Macaw-like Rito can be found traveling Hyrule and playing songs connected to Ancient Shrines. By listening to the Rito bard, Link is given clues on how to reveal several Shrines scattered throughout Hyrule. But although Kass proved to be a fan-favorite character, he is nowhere to be found in TOTK. Instead, a similar role is held by the Rito reporter Penn. Penn helps Link chase down the truth behind many rumors regarding the missing Princess Zelda in TOTK, in a quest chain that earns Link the Froggy Armor set among other rewards.
With Kass seemingly nowhere to be found in Hyrule, it is possible that he has traveled beyond the kingdom’s borders. But whatever the true reason for his absence, DLC for Tears of the Kingdom could easily mark his reappearance. Perhaps Kass will return to Washa’s Bluff with new songs to sing and meet Penn there, which could lead to the two comparing their knowledge of Hyrule’s past and present. Moreover, with his extensive knowledge of ancient melodies, Kass is perfectly positioned to know a song concerning Ganondorf and the Imprisoning War. This could then trigger a new questline revealing more lore regarding the ancient past and history of Hyrule.
Penn is left somewhat depressed by the conclusion of “Potential Princess Sightings!,” concluding that Link did most of the legwork in investigating each rumor. A scenario such as this would provide him with the perfect opportunity to regain his confidence and redeem himself by taking an active role in the investigation of Kass’ song alongside Link in TOTK DLC. It would also provide a satisfying end to Penn’s character arc, especially as the catalyst for this change would be the same Rito whose example he hopes to learn from in honing his craft.
