Pope Francis has expressed his condemnation of the Quran burning incident in Sweden, stating that he felt “angry and disgusted” witnessing the desecration of the Muslim holy book.
In an interview published on Monday in the United Arab Emirates newspaper Al Ittihad, the pope emphasized the importance of respecting any book considered holy in order to show respect towards those who believe in it.
“I feel angry and disgusted at these actions,” he added.
Last week, on Wednesday, while many Muslims were celebrating Eid al-Adha, an individual in Stockholm tore up and burned a Quran outside a mosque, leading to widespread condemnation, including from the governments of Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), a group of 57 states, called for collective measures and the utilization of international law to combat religious hatred.
In a statement, the OIC emphasized the need to constantly remind the international community about the urgent application of international law, which explicitly prohibits the promotion of religious hatred.
