No matter what the platform, it’s a great time to get into Final Fantasy XIV. There are four expansion packs out, with hundreds of hours of gameplay between them. The fifth FFXIV expansion, Dawntrail, is underway – and before that, the 6.5 update will bring even more content and quality-of-life improvements to the game. Sweeping graphical updates are coming soon to bring the beautiful vistas of Hydaelyn up to modern standards. It may sound like a lot for the new player, but FFXIV also has a robust system of tutorials and mentorship to help guide them in the early game.
On the first day of FFXIV’s US Fan Festival in Las Vegas, director-producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida called Xbox head Phil Spencer out on stage to announce the upcoming release of FFXIV on Xbox Series X/S. It was a heartwarming moment, and certainly piqued the interest of many an Xbox player who’s been waiting to get into the MMO. Still, getting into such an expansive game can be daunting at the very beginning. What Xbox FFXIV players have to look forward to, though, is nothing but a good time and a great deal.
FFXIV will become available on Xbox Series X in spring 2024, and by then, its free trial will include the base game and its first two expansions: Heavensward and Stormblood. Each one is a game-sized addition, with enormous new areas, a long saga told through tons of Main Scenario Quests, and tens of interesting and challenging dungeons to explore. That’s easily 180 hours of gameplay or more, all absolutely free for new players without any restrictions on playtime. It’s not limited to FFXIV on Xbox, either; this is a great deal for players on all platforms.
There may not be any limits to play time in FFXIV’s free trial, but that doesn’t mean it gives players full access to the game. Similar restrictions will likely carry over into the newly expanded free trial as well. Firstly, players can only have one character on each of FFXIV’s Worlds, up to a maximum of eight. However, it’s not necessary to have multiple alternate characters to experience all the player classes in FFXIV; a single-player character can use all of them, and switch between them at will. Levels are currently capped at 60 for all classes during a trial, but with Stormblood, caps may go up to 70.
Certain purchasable in-game items, like gift codes, are not available during a free trial. Trial players’ communication options are also limited; they can’t shout, send DMs, or mail letters to other players. They also can’t trade, use the Market Board trade network, join, or create a Free Company (FFXIV’s version of a guild). They also can’t form parties, but can join them if invited.
