Ecuador has declared a state of emergency in three provinces following a shooting incident that resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including the mayor of a major city.
President Guillermo Lasso of Ecuador announced the measure on Monday and paid tribute to the two victims, Agustín Intriago and Ariana Estefanía Chancay.
Lasso expressed his condolences on Twitter, stating, “No mother should have to bury her children, and no child should grow up without their parent, especially due to a criminal attack. Today, Ecuador mourns.”
Lasso also mentioned that a suspect in the shooting has been apprehended, and investigations are currently underway.
The shooting occurred on Sunday in the city of Manta, where Intriago, aged 38, had recently begun his second term as mayor in May. He had been reelected in February.
According to the newspaper El Universo, Chancay, a young football player for the Las Dragonas team, approached the mayor to have a conversation when the shooting incident took place. She also succumbed to her injuries.
