Magic: The Gathering Welcoming Final Fantasy & Fallout Cards in the Near Future

Magic: The Gathering Welcoming Final Fantasy & Fallout Cards in the Near Future

In its next crossovers, Magic: ⁣The Gathering ⁣ will add ‌cards themed to the hit video game series Final ⁤Fantasy and ‍Fallout. The newest‌ Universes Beyond collaborations were announced at GenCon, North America’s largest tabletop gaming convention, on August 5,⁤ 2023. They’re part of a more widespread effort by Wizards of the⁣ Coast to celebrate the trading card game‘s ⁣30th ⁣anniversary – the first-ever MTG cards became available 30 ⁣years prior to the day.

These latest crossovers ⁣should⁣ come as no surprise; MTG‍ has a long history of collaborating with other properties. Its past collaborations⁤ have ranged from the tangentially similar, like Warhammer and Arcane, to ⁣the⁢ out-of-left-field‌ like Stranger Things and Transformers. Most recently,‍ MTG⁢ released a set of Lord of the Rings-themed cards. That set‍ included a ⁢one-of-a-kind One Ring⁢ collectible that‍ sold⁣ for $2 million‍ to Post Malone, of all people. While little is known about exactly what’s contained in the Final‍ Fantasy and Fallout releases – and what kind of eye-watering prices⁣ they may fetch – Wizards of the ⁣Coast has⁣ provided just a handful of juicy tidbits.

It only makes ⁤sense for MTG to collaborate with Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy boasts over 35 years of strange lands, memorable ‍characters, ⁣and ⁣all-powerful deities who⁤ would fit ⁤right into any MTG deck. MTG’s Final Fantasy cards will⁣ be released in 2025, as one of the TCG’s tentpole booster⁤ packs. MTG usually puts out four sets of booster packs per year,‌ with each⁣ purchased pack ⁣containing 15⁤ random cards of varying rarities. The collection ‍will ‍feature iconic figures from all the⁤ mainline Final Fantasy ‌games that have been released to date ⁢- including the most⁢ recent, ‌the masterful Final Fantasy 16. It’ll also be available for⁢ digital play ⁣through WotC’s cross-platform online version of MTG, Magic: The Gathering Arena.

In a similar vein, MTG’s Fallout Commander Decks will incorporate characters and concepts from ‌a totally different kind of RPG. The Fallout series has painted‌ a vivid, violent⁤ picture of its iconic irradiated wasteland since the⁢ release‌ of its very⁣ first game way back⁤ in 1997.‌ The MTG-Fallout collaboration comes in⁤ the form of Commander Decks – ⁣these are full⁣ sets of 100 cards each, ⁤complete and ready-to-play out of the box. Points⁢ of inspiration for the cards‌ will include ⁢Fallout’s perennial mascots, ‌including raiders, ‌robots, mutants, and monsters. MTG’s Fallout Commander Decks are⁣ slated‌ for release in ‍March 2024.

That’s just a little bit ‍of what’s new⁣ to MTG in the coming days. The TCG will also see a Doctor Who collaboration in October 2023, a ‍third⁢ Modern Horizons⁢ set in 2024, and a crossover⁤ between the Ravnica setting‍ and the murder mystery‌ board game Clue later‌ that year. These varied and vibrant collaborations, especially the ones with Fallout and Final Fantasy, should each help bring an influx of new players ‌to the 30-year-old card game that is Magic: The Gathering.
