With a trailer officially announcing Ubisoft’s new Star Wars game, Star Wars Outlaws, long-time Star Wars game players are once again talking about Kyle Katarn. The gorgeous cinematic trailer offered players a first look at what is being described as the first Star Wars open-world game. In among the shots of impressive planet vistas and criminal gangs was a face that some fans seem to think looks very familiar.
Aiming to release in 2024, Star Wars Outlaws will follow young scoundrel Kay Vess as she seeks to make a new life for herself in the criminal underworld of the Star Wars galaxy. The brief synopsis on the official Star Wars website explains that Kay will be attempting to pull off one of the biggest heists in the Outer Rim. So just what does all that have to do with a Star Wars Legends hero from the 1990s?
Many Star Wars fans have taken to social media to point out the similarity between a character seen in the Star Wars Outlaws trailer and Kyle Katarn. At first glance, there is a physical resemblance, and although the character is referred to as Jaylen by Kay, Katarn did use several aliases throughout his life. In fact, Katarn started his time in the Star Wars galaxy as a mercenary, something that would work well with Star Wars Outlaws’ themes if Ubisoft is planning to reintroduce Katarn.
Kyle Katarn first appeared in Star Wars: Dark Forces, a 1995 FPS which established Katarn’s backstory. In Dark Forces, former Imperial officer turned mercenary Katarn is tasked with stealing the plans for the Death Star. Then one year later, Katarn is instrumental in putting a stop to the Empire’s Dark Trooper Project. It is during this initial adventure that Katarn also learns he is Force sensitive, which changes the trajectory of his life from that point.
The rest of Katarn’s story is told through the next two games of the Star Wars Jedi Knight series. In the second game in the series, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2, Katarn is hunting for his father’s killer when he crosses paths with a dark Jedi named Jerec. It is this encounter that sets Katarn on the path to finding the sacred Valley of the Jedi and becoming a Jedi himself.
