Ever since the release of “Alita: Battle Angel” (2019), it has garnered a large fanbase eagerly anticipating news of a potential sequel.
In an interview with The Wrap, Robert Rodriguez has confirmed plans for a sequel to the franchise. He mentioned that the process of Disney’s acquisition of Fox had previously hindered their progress.
However, according to the director, the acquisition process is no longer a barrier to creating new films.
“Jim [James Cameron] and I have always discussed our desire to make another Alita film. Now that this studio [20th Century] has been acquired by another studio [Disney], they are just beginning to produce films. For a while, 20th Century wasn’t producing any new films at all. I believe there is now an opportunity to make multiple films, which would be wonderful,” said Rodriguez.
This is just one of several exciting updates from those involved in the making of the first “Alita: Battle Angel” film. Rodriguez recently confirmed that negotiations for a sequel are underway behind the scenes, stating, “Yes, we’ve discussed it, and we would love to do it.”
If that isn’t enough to demonstrate their dedication to the project, Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron have pledged their commitment to bring “Alita 2” to life.
James Cameron also mentioned that work on ”Alita: Battle Angel 2″ (and more!) can already commence. In June 2023, the renowned director stated, “I am working on “Avatar” in Wellington and Los Angeles. And for the new “Alita: Battle Angel” films, I will be working in Austin.”
A return to the cyberpunk world of “Alita: Battle Angel” would mark Rodriguez’s return to one of the most beloved franchises, similar to his recent involvement with the “Spy Kids” film. Rodriguez is once again directing the recently released Netflix reboot, “Spy Kids: All the Time in the World.”
In addition to “Spy Kids” and “Alita,” Rodriguez has expressed his desire to film several more installments of the “Desperado” series. All of this suggests that the director may have a busy schedule ahead.
