The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon has reported that an Israeli attack targeted one of its patrols in the southern part of the country, despite a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas that has largely calmed the situation along the Lebanon-Israel border.
“At approximately 12:00 pm, a UNIFIL patrol was struck by gunfire from the Israeli army” near Aitarun, stated the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon on Saturday.
No peacekeepers were harmed, but the vehicle sustained damage,” the statement added, noting that “this incident occurred during a period of relative calm” along the Israel-Lebanon border.
Since the start of the Israel-Palestine conflict on October 7, there have been escalating exchanges of fire along the Lebanon-Israel border, primarily involving Israel and the Shia movement Hezbollah, as well as Palestinian groups. These incidents have raised concerns about a wider conflict.
The intensity of the border clashes has gradually increased over the past few weeks, but a full-scale war has not yet erupted. Initially, both sides engaged in artillery attacks, and Israel also deployed drones.
A four-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas began on Friday, and a source close to Hezbollah informed the AFP news agency that the Iran-backed group would also adhere to the ceasefire if Israel did so.
