Israeli Fire Hits UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon

The ⁤UN peacekeeping force in ‌Lebanon has reported that an Israeli ⁢attack ⁤targeted one ‍of its patrols in the ‍southern part of the country, despite a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas that has largely calmed the situation along the Lebanon-Israel border.

“At approximately 12:00 pm, a UNIFIL patrol was struck‍ by gunfire ⁢from the Israeli army” ⁢near Aitarun, stated the ⁢United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon on Saturday.

No peacekeepers were harmed, ‌but the vehicle sustained damage,”⁤ the statement added, noting that “this incident occurred during a period of relative calm” ‍along the Israel-Lebanon border.

Since the start of the ⁣Israel-Palestine conflict on October 7, there have been escalating ‌exchanges of fire along the Lebanon-Israel border, primarily involving Israel and the Shia movement Hezbollah, as well ‍as Palestinian groups. These incidents⁢ have raised concerns about a wider conflict.

The intensity of the border clashes has gradually increased over‌ the past few weeks, but a full-scale⁢ war has not yet erupted. Initially, both sides engaged in‌ artillery attacks, and Israel also deployed drones.

A⁢ four-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas began on⁤ Friday, and a source close to Hezbollah informed the AFP news agency that the ‌Iran-backed group would also adhere to the ceasefire if Israel did so.
