Players can choose between a variety of lightsaber options in Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars: Jedi titles. While this customization is great – and Jedi: Survivor took it to another level with the number of parts that could be collected around its various planet hubs – this does raise the question of whether the game’s protagonist Cal Kestis has a canon lightsaber color.
Initially, lightsabers started off as blue and red to signify who was good and evil, respectively, then Luke’s new lightsaber in Return of the Jedi was green simply so it would show against the blue sky during the fight on Jabba’s barge due to the technology of the time that movie was made. Since then, different colors such as white, yellow, orange, and purple – the latter simply because it was Samuel L. Jackson’s favorite color – had been introduced, and Star Wars started incorporating these colors into lightsaber lore, with them each representing aspects of their lightsabers’ owners. Jedi: Survivor introduced three new lightsaber colors to choose from, cyan, indigo, and magenta in addition to those seen in other Star Wars media.
Although Respawn Entertainment hasn’t provided a definitive answer, Cal’s canon lightsaber is most likely the traditional blue. The promotional art and trailers for both Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor shows Cal wielding a blue lightsaber, despite players being able to change the color very early on in each game.
This is backed up by the fact that in the scenes prior to being given the option to customize Cal’s lightsaber – such as Jedi: Survivor’s Coruscant intro in which he fights a team led by the Ninth Sister – Cal’s lightsaber is blue. Cal’s lightsaber also appeared blue in Jedi: Fallen Order’s flashbacks to his training as a Padawan with Jedi Master Jaro Tapal, and again when he creates his second, dual-bladed lightsaber on Ilum before players get the option to change its color again, so with this latter cutscene in particular not opting to adapt to the color players have chosen, it seems highly likely that Respawn Entertainment considers blue to be the canon color for the young Jedi.
A blue lightsaber would make sense for Cal, as it’s supposed to represent righteousness and bravery, which are traits Cal demonstrates consistently throughout his story. Blue was also used to indicate that the user was a Jedi Guardian, someone who was highly skilled in lightsaber combat, which Cal clearly seems to be, having combined a variety of different lightsaber forms into his combat style, rather than merely mastering one like most Jedi.
