Is Obtaining the Hylian Shield in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Worth the Effort?

Link’s signature Hylian Shield does appear in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but it can be quite a hassle to find. TOTK encourages creativity and constantly provides players with countless options for weapons and equipment. While not all of these are useful in their base forms, Link’s Fuse ability can create high-quality equipment out of rusty swords and spare parts at the touch of a button, making it harder to justify spending hours looking for one particular weapon or piece of armor.

The Hylian Shield is one of TOTK’s finest pieces of equipment. It boasts a base defense stat of 90, far higher than anything players will find in half-buried chests or loot off slain Bokoblins. Zelda series diehards should also be on the lookout for it. It may not be as iconic as the Master Sword, but its design and name reference an iconic part of Link’s loadout, a shield that’s been with him since the Ocarina of Time days. Still, TOTK doesn’t make getting the Hylian Shield, or the Master Sword, easy.

There’s really no need for the Hylian Shield’s 90 defense in the first few hours of the game. Early enemies just don’t hit hard enough to justify a shield with that kind of stopping power. TOTK is more fun when it’s a little bit challenging, and getting the Hylian Shield early can make things too easy. It also can’t be used with two-handed weapons, limiting the player’s options.

The Hylian Shield, like any other shield in TOTK, can also break with use. However, unlike the Master Sword, it doesn’t recharge; if players break it, they’ll have to go out and get another one, and the Hylian Shield doesn’t always pop back up in the same place, either. Getting it for the second time can be even harder than the first.
