Is it Possible to Obtain Epona in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?

Riding horses in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom can be a fun way to speedily cross distances of the large open world in the game, but there is one beloved horse in particular that just feels like she belongs by Link’s side; Epona. Ever since her first appearance in Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Epona has been a fan favorite and is widely considered to be Link’s true horse. While there are many beautiful horses available in TOTK, none can compare to the connection that fans have with Epona, and therefore some have wondered where she is in the game.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the sequel to Breath of the Wild, and as such offers many similarities to that original title. Riding horses and making use of the stables around the world of Hyrule is one of these features that has carried over, which is particularly helpful given the enormity of the map for Link to travel across. Epona is the quintessential horse companion for Link, yet getting her in either of these games requires a bit more effort.

As was the case in unlocking Epona in BOTW, the only way to bring Epona into Tears of the Kingdom is through the use of an Amiibo. Either the Super Smash Bros. Link Amiibo or the Twilight Princess Link Amiibo can offer Epona as one of the possibilities when scanned in during TOTK. Young Link and Toon Link for the Super Smash Bros. set will not have Epona, only the standard Link Amiibo from the set will. Once she has appeared through an Amiibo scan, Epona is an already tame horse and has the best stats of any mount in the game.

Players who already unlocked Epona using an Amiibo in BOTW can transfer her and any other horses from that game into TOTK. As long as BOTW was played on the same Nintendo Switch as TOTK and the save data was not deleted, players can import all of their horses to TOTK by visiting the stables. This feature helps to connect the two games and allows players to enjoy all of their mounts, Epona included, without having to collect them again in the new adventure.

Besides the classic nostalgia feel of letting Link ride Epona across the hills of Hyrule, Epona also provides maxed-out stats and a gentle temperament. She comes fully bonded with Link already, making her easy to control, although she cannot have the towing harness attached to her. Long-time Legend of Zelda fans will love the roleplaying aspect of being able to have Epona, perhaps even enough to splurge on purchasing the Amiibo. Many of the Zelda Amiibos also offer other rewards such as paraglider fabric and outfits in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for players who enjoy adding to their cosmetic collections.
