Despite encountering technical issues at the beginning, Payday 3 has managed to surpass the 3 million player milestone within its first few weeks, marking a successful start for Starbreeze Studios’ project. However, the initial success seems to have taken an unexpected turn, particularly on Steam.
There has been a significant 90% decline in the number of concurrent players in Payday 3 compared to its peak performance on its launch day. Currently, the game ranks 153rd among the most popular games on Steam, while Payday 2, surprisingly, is experiencing a resurgence in popularity among Valve platform users and demonstrating much higher activity than its direct successor.
Specifically, Payday 3 reached a peak of 77,938 concurrent players on September 21st of last year, its launch day. However, in the last 24 hours, the game has only attracted 8,117 players, which is approximately 10.4% of the initial release day figures. On the other hand, Payday 2 had the participation of 54,790 players in the last 24 hours, placing it 29th on the list of the most played games on Steam, surpassing its sequel by 124 positions.
According to user reviews, Payday 2 has received a ”very positive” rating on Steam, while Payday 3 has a “mixed” rating. Some players have mentioned that Payday 3 does not always function properly in online mode.
The game developer has attributed some of the initial player matching issues in Payday 3 to a “software update” released by a third-party partner. Starbreeze has stated that they are currently evaluating this new player matching partner and working towards reducing Payday 3’s reliance on online services.
Undoubtedly, technical problems and the current level of content have influenced the game’s popularity on Steam, but Starbreeze is not sitting idle. The roadmap includes plans for all DLCs for Payday 3, as well as various updates aimed at further improving and enriching the game.
