Game Boy Color Now Supports McDonald’s New Game Release

McDonald’s, purveyor of refrigerated cheese and meat patties, is venturing into the video game industry to celebrate Grimace’s 52nd birthday. The iconic hairy purple character has inspired a side-scrolling platformer game that can be played on mobile, desktop, and even Game Boy Color. McDonald’s released the game for free on June 12.

Grimace’s Birthday, developed by Brooklyn-based indie studio Krool Toys, known for creating retro games based on popular albums, takes place on Grimace’s birthday. The objective is to gather his missing friends before blowing out the candles on his cake. Players guide Grimace on his skateboard, collecting whipped purple milkshakes along the way. The game offers both a normal mode and a challenging mode, where auto-grind is disabled and tricks earn double points.

Krool Toys has not yet responded to Kotaku’s request for comment. However, the Game Boy ROM can currently be found on the Internet Archive. McDonald’s, in a press release, only promotes the optimized versions of the game for mobile and desktop.
