With the large amount of obtainable armor in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, it can be hard to know which sets are worth going through the effort to upgrade. Between defense values, set bonuses, and material and Rupee costs, there are a number of factors to consider when upgrading armors – and although many of the sets carry over from their appearances in Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom also introduces a variety of completely new armor sets to consider.
Complicating matters, many armor sets in Tears of the Kingdom grant set bonuses – while Link is wearing is all three pieces of certain sets, and (usually) when every piece has been upgraded at least twice, the armor will grant a secondary effect on top of any bonuses it already provides. However, there are still a number of complete sets in TOTK that do not grant effects or bonuses no matter how much they’re upgraded, making them less efficient choices to spend money and materials upgrading. To make matters worse, TOTK gives no indication of which sets will have set bonuses beforehand, which can potentially make upgrading armor something of a guessing game.
The Snowquill set, which can be bought at Rito Village, provides the initial effect of cold resistance, making it useful for exploring Hyrule’s colder regions in Zelda: TOTK. After upgrading each piece twice, however, the set also gains the Unfreezable effect, which prevent Link from being frozen by ice attacks. For the first two upgrade levels, the materials needed to upgrade an individual piece are as follows:
- Level 1: 3x Red Chuchu Jelly, 2x Warm Safflina
- Level 2: 5x Red Chuchu Jelly, 3x Warm Safflina, 1x Ruby
The Flamebreaker set can be purchased in Goron City, and it’s Flame Guard effect makes it useful for exploring Death Mountain and its many caves. When upgraded sufficiently, the set grants the Fireproof set bonus, making Link immune to being set on fire.
Getting the Zora set in Tears of the Kingdom requires the completion of different quests in Zora’s Domain, except for the Zora Armor, which is given to players as part of the region’s main questline. Aside from raising Link’s swimming speed, the chest piece also allows players to ascend waterfalls, and the armor’s set bonus effect, Swim Dash Stamina Up, decreases the amount of stamina that’s used when dashing in the water.
