In a recent court document reviewed by Engadget, the Federal Trade Commission has alleged that Amazon utilized Signal’s disappearing messages feature to hide communications as part of an antitrust case against the company. Despite being informed by the agency of an investigation and being asked to preserve communications, the retailer continued to automatically delete them. Both founder and former CEO Jeff Bezos and current CEO Andy Jassy have been implicated.
According to the full document obtained by The Washington Post (owned by Bezos), the FTC stated, “For years, Amazon’s top executives, including founder and former CEO Jeff Bezos, engaged in discussions on sensitive business matters, such as antitrust, using the Signal encrypted-messaging app instead of email. These executives activated Signal’s ‘disappearing message’ feature, which permanently erases messages, even after Amazon was aware of the investigation into its behavior.”
