FTC Alleges Amazon Used Signal’s Auto-Deleting Messages to Conceal Evidence


In a recent court⁤ document reviewed by Engadget,⁢ the Federal Trade ‌Commission has alleged that Amazon⁢ utilized ⁤Signal’s disappearing messages feature to ⁢hide communications as‌ part of an antitrust case against ⁤the company. Despite being informed by the agency of an investigation and being asked⁢ to⁤ preserve communications, the retailer continued to automatically delete them. ‌Both founder and former CEO Jeff Bezos and ​current ​CEO⁣ Andy Jassy have been implicated.

According to‍ the full document obtained by The Washington Post⁢ (owned by Bezos), the FTC ⁢stated, “For years,‌ Amazon’s top executives, including founder and former CEO ​Jeff Bezos, engaged in discussions on sensitive business matters, such as antitrust, using the ‍Signal encrypted-messaging app instead of ​email.‍ These executives activated​ Signal’s ‘disappearing message’ feature, which permanently erases messages, even after Amazon ​was aware of the investigation into its​ behavior.”
