Every now and then, we encounter truly remarkable coincidences in our lives, and actor Sam Witwer had one such experience. While you may not recognize his name, you might remember him as the face behind major video game projects like the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed series and the 2019 release, Days Gone.
At Bend Studio, he brought to life the protagonist, Deacon St. John, who traverses the world on a motorcycle, battling massive hordes of zombies. But before taking on the undead, the actor made an appearance in one of the most iconic series of the genre in recent years.
Indeed, Witwer appeared in “The Walking Dead,” debuting in the series’ premiere episode in 2010, albeit from the other side of the apocalypse. He portrayed a soldier-turned-zombie, meeting his end at the hands of Rick Grimes and a bullet from his Colt. Screenshots from the inaugural episode aired on AMC can be found below.
What’s particularly intriguing is that the first episode is titled “Days Gone Bye,” which seems to foreshadow the professional path of our hero. He also featured in the second episode, “Guts,” although his character’s nature limited his ability to engage in meaningful dialogue. There were plans for his return in the second season.
The show’s creator, Frank Darabont, intended to delve into the backstory of this soldier-turned-zombie and his eventual demise inside a military vehicle. According to Witwer, budget constraints prevented this from materializing, but the creator had envisioned showcasing a group of rangers battling in Atlanta at the time.
