From The Walking Dead to Days Gone: The Actor Who Went from Zombie to Zombie Slayer

Every now and ⁢then, we encounter truly remarkable coincidences in our lives, and actor Sam Witwer experienced one such extraordinary coincidence. While his name may not ring a ⁢bell, you might recognize him as the face behind⁤ major video game projects like the Star Wars: The ⁤Force ⁤Unleashed series and the 2019 release, Days Gone.

At Bend Studio, he brought to life the‌ protagonist, Deacon St. John, who traverses the post-apocalyptic world⁣ on a motorcycle, battling massive ⁢hordes of zombies. But before taking on the undead, the actor made an appearance in one of the most iconic series of the genre in recent ⁣years.

Indeed, ‍Witwer had a role in “The Walking Dead,” making his debut in the series’ premiere episode back⁢ in 2010, albeit from the other side‍ of the apocalypse. During⁣ that time, he⁢ portrayed a zombie soldier who met his demise at the hands of ⁢Rick Grimes and his Colt. Below, you’ll find ⁣screenshots from the inaugural episode aired on the ‍AMC channel.

What’s particularly intriguing is that the first episode is titled “Days Gone Bye,” which seems to foreshadow the actor’s future involvement⁢ in a project with ⁢a similar ⁤name. He ⁣also appeared ⁣in the second episode, ‌”Guts,” although his character’s nature⁣ prevented him ⁤from delivering eloquent dialogues. There were plans‍ for him⁣ to reappear ‍in the ⁣second season as well.

Frank⁣ Darabont, the showrunner, had intended to delve into the backstory of this zombie soldier ‌and depict his ultimate demise inside a military vehicle. According to⁣ Witwer,‍ budget constraints prevented this from materializing, but the creator had envisioned showcasing a group of rangers battling in Atlanta at the time.
