Fortunately, Witcher & Cyberpunk Will Not Be Limited to PlayStation Exclusivity.

Rumors have been circulating recently about a possible acquisition of CD Projekt Red, the developer behind The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, by Sony. Many fans have expressed concern that future entries in these series could become exclusive to PlayStation, as this kind of exclusivity has become common practice following major studio buyouts within the industry.

Acquisitions have become a regular part of the games industry, particularly in recent years. Microsoft’s acquisition of studios such as Bethesda Softworks, and its attempt to acquire Activision Blizzard, have become some of the more high-profile ones. In the case of Bethesda, recent and upcoming releases such as Redfall and Starfield have become exclusive to Xbox and PC since the buyout, and many believe that the much-anticipated The Elder Scrolls 6 will be too, despite some of the series’ previous entries such as Oblivion and Skyrim being multi-platform releases.

A former CDPR employee, Rafal Jaki, who served as Executive Producer and Showrunner for Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and as the writer of The Witcher: Ronin manga, took to Twitter to point out how the rumors of Sony acquiring CD Projekt Red could be debunked. Jaki explained that because CDPR is publicly listed on the stock exchange, an acquisition would very quickly become public knowledge as Sony would have to announce its intentions, and the free-float investors and the board would have to sell their shares.

Acquisitions and console exclusivity may be commonplace within the gaming industry now, and as such, the gaming community often debates the benefits and issues surrounding such matters. With both Sondej and Jaki irrefutably shutting down the rumors of Sony acquiring CD Projekt Red, it’s clear that the confirmed Witcher 4 and any potential Cyberpunk sequels will be accessible to players across multiple platforms when they do release, and hopefully, Liz’s claim can be put to rest for now.
