Capcom has shared additional information about Dragon’s Dogma 2, presented at the Tokyo Game Show. The environment looks quite large, which is logical considering that the world is four times bigger than in the first game. In an interview with VGC, game director Hideaki Itsuno also confirmed that exploration takes place without loading screens.
If we talk about the smoothness of the world, there are no loading screens during exploration. Of course, if there is a cutscene, we can load it and then return you to free exploration, but when it comes to dungeons or caves and exploring different parts of the world, you will never see a loading screen. Roads in the game serve to some extent to give players an idea of where they need to go. But this is just speculation. From a gameplay mechanics standpoint, they don’t mean anything except that we know people tend to follow roads when they are shown to them, and it helps us develop the game so that players don’t get lost too often. In addition, the AI of pawns and other characters knows where the roads are and will consider them as reference points for where to go. So if you want to explore and ignore the main quest, exploring the world is encouraged. You can freely navigate the world. If you want, you can stick to the designated path. But if you want to deviate from the path and find your own way forward, you can do that too. However, you cannot climb flat cliffs, but you can climb sections that are roughly the same height as your character.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 has not been released yet, but it is in development for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. The world consists of two parts – Verminde, ruled by the Undying who killed the dragon, and Batala, ruled by the Beastfolk. Players are offered four professions to choose from, and as the game progresses, other more difficult professions are unlocked.
