The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mexico has unveiled a video showcasing the police raid on its embassy in Quito, Ecuador, condemning it as an unauthorized and aggressive intrusion.
In a statement released on Tuesday, available in both Spanish and English, the ministry criticized Ecuador for breaching international agreements safeguarding embassies from law enforcement intervention.
The statement emphasized the violent treatment of Mexican staff by Ecuadorian police and the breach of the embassy’s immunity, vowing to pursue legal action with the backing of allied nations.
The footage captures the successful arrest of former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, who had taken refuge in the embassy following a corruption conviction.
Viewers can see Ecuadorian police assembling outside the embassy walls at night, with an officer climbing over the barrier armed with a gun.
The scene then shifts to security cameras inside the embassy, showing police entering forcefully through the door and aiming a gun at Mexican diplomat Roberto Canseco, who tries to block their path.
Canseco is later seen being pushed to the ground outside the embassy while attempting to prevent law enforcement vehicles from taking Glas away.
During his daily press briefing on Tuesday, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador addressed the video, reiterating the ministry’s warning of legal repercussions for the embassy breach.
Asserting Mexico’s independence and sovereignty, he stated, “We will not tolerate any interference in our country.”
