Epic Games has confirmed that it will continue to give away free games in its store in 2024 and beyond. Speaking at Unreal Fest 2023, Kyle Billing, Director of Product and Content Strategy at Epic Games, mentioned that the free game giveaways in the Epic Games Store will continue. It was stated that the program remains a key factor in attracting users and converting them into paying users. According to the presentation, the initiative has attracted over 90 million new users to date.
In addition, it was mentioned that “Weekly Offers” is the first continuously evolving store campaign aimed at spreading content beyond major campaigns. The initiative is open to any content and anyone interested can participate. Applications are accepted directly through the Discount Management Tool. Offers will take place every Tuesday and will be featured on several premium shelves.
On October 16, 2023, the Epic First Run initiative will launch, focusing on new games that will be exclusively available in the Epic Games Store. In addition, the Now on Epic program promotes catalog growth by encouraging partners to bring games back to the Epic Games Store. Under both programs, the partner will receive 100% net revenue from player spending processed by Epic Games for the first 6 months. Unlike Epic First Run, where the company did not disclose an end date for the program, the Now on Epic program will only run for one calendar year.
The presentation also discussed improvements in storefront performance. The company’s focus began with improving cold launch time and then aims to improve the system tray recovery time. The EGS client now has reduced cold launch time from 13 seconds in February to less than 5 seconds in the latest test in August. The next phase of work will be focused on reducing the gap in SysTray recovery, specifically in the library’s SysTray recovery. Users will start seeing these improvements in 2024.
