The upcoming Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Erdtree offers interesting potential for the game’s expansion, but a new multiplayer mode could be an even more exciting addition. Previous DLC for the game came in the form of the free Colosseum Update, which offered a significant expansion to multiplayer PVP combat. Information on Shadow of the Erdtree is currently scarce, but it can be expected to offer new brutal challenges to be conquered. This expansion has a strong legacy to uphold, making its lack of a confirmed release date unsurprising as FromSoftware works to iterate on the world of Elden Ring.
Although additional campaign content is more than welcome, Elden Ring’s multiplayer is practically begging for updates that would require less time and investment than Shadow of the Erdtree. The Colosseum Update is only one example of how much room for multiplayer expansion there is. Some of the most exciting twists on the game are concepts that move away from the FromSoft standard of a focus on combat, offering a fresh angle on the Lands Between. One particular avenue that multiplayer could take follows up on an item already included in the game that hasn’t yet been used to its full potential.
Originally conceived as a custom mode for Valve’s versatile FPS Counter Strike: Source and popularized through Garry’s Mod and Team Fortress 2, prop hunt offers a twist on hide-and-seek by allowing players to disguise themselves as random objects. Oddly enough, FromSoft has already done the heavy lifting for prop hunt by including the Mimic’s Veil in Elden Ring, a tool that provides the ability to take on the appearance of nearby objects by expending Focus Points. Implementing a proper prop hunt mode would let this feature shine to its fullest potential, making for an unusually frivolous multiplayer take on Elden Ring.
Prop hunt has spread well beyond Valve-developed titles, with a variety of games from other publishers either centering around this mode or offering it as a side feature. FromSoft could stand out from the pack thanks to the immersion of Elden’s Ring’s world, a hauntingly gorgeous fantasy setting unlike any popular options for prop hunt that are currently available. The goofy flavor of Team Fortress 2 might seem like the natural fit for a mode full of high-speed chases with careening inanimate objects, but its inclusion in Elden Ring would be the perfect outlet for the sillier impulses that have colored many player interactions in FromSoft games across the years.
It’s unlikely that FromSoft will release any major overhauls to Elden Ring in the time before Shadow of the Erdtree’s release, but a prop hunt mode would be the perfect minor addition. It’s been proven time and time again that online communities can get extensive mileage out of this mode, and an Elden Ring implementation would provide the perfect way to pass the time during the wait for DLC. Shadow of the Erdtree might be the serious face of Elden Ring‘s future, but there’s no reason prop…
