Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, recently announced a crackdown on problematic content on the messaging platform following his arrest in France. He revealed that measures have been taken to remove illegal goods being sold through Telegram’s search feature by violators of their terms of service.
In an effort to ensure the integrity of the platform for its nearly billion users, Durov stated that all identified problematic content has been eliminated using artificial intelligence. Additionally, updates have been made to their terms of service and privacy policy to cooperate with legal requests by sharing infringers’ details with authorities.
Durov’s arrest in August led to charges related to extremist and terrorist content on Telegram, resulting in a five-million-euro bail. Despite initial criticism, he has since made changes such as modifying features like ”people nearby” to promote legitimate businesses over bots and scammers.
Known for his enigmatic persona and ascetic lifestyle, Durov aims to shift the narrative around moderation on Telegram from criticism to praise. With a fortune estimated at $15.5 billion, he continues to prioritize user safety while upholding the platform’s standards against illicit activities.
