While optimizing your build can be enjoyable, sometimes it’s more interesting to take a different path. Not all builds in Baldur’s Gate 3 have to prioritize power and efficiency. In fact, some of the most fun characters to play are those with unique concepts, similar to Dungeons & Dragons.
Baldur’s Gate 3 offers a fantastic roleplaying experience, with plenty of NPCs and companions to interact with. Whether you’re focusing on roleplaying for your first campaign or just unwinding after a challenging Honour Mode run, there are plenty of reasons to prioritize fun over the highest stats. The builds below may not be optimal or powerful, but they offer something different and, most importantly, they are fun. These builds work well for a custom Tav or even a respecced or changed companion character.
First up is the pure bard, which is more of a roleplay style than a build. Any BG3 bard subclass can be chosen for this character, but College of Lore works well thematically. The key to this character is choosing spells, equipment, and responses that are in keeping with a bard who has been plucked from their normal life and thrust into an adventure.
A bard is a character that avoids the fray if possible, so crowd control spells like Tasha’s hideous laughter, hold person, Otto’s irresistible dance, and silence are important. Outside of combat, charm person, disguise self, or seeming are also good choices. It’s also incredibly fun to get serious NPCs to dance along to a tune, which can often make for a comical sight.
Fighter is one of the most versatile classes in both DnD and Baldur’s Gate 3. They can use all varieties of weapons and armor, making them the perfect class for beginners. They are also tons of fun to play, with abilities like Action Surge adding to the enjoyment.
