Ridley Scott gained fame through a series of blockbuster films that are beloved by movie enthusiasts. Movies like “Alien” and “Gladiator” have become timeless classics and have left a lasting impact on the history of cinema. Even years later, audiences continue to revisit these films. However, it is his 1982 film “Blade Runner,” centered around an android hunter, that holds a special place in the director’s heart from the very beginning.
This film is considered one of the pioneers of the cyberpunk genre in cinema, which explores futuristic science fiction themes and the challenges of human existence in a technologically advanced world.
Despite “Blade Runner” now being regarded as an essential film for science fiction fans, Ridley Scott himself, despite his deep affection for the movie, does not recall its creation very vividly. In a recent interview with Total Film magazine, he expressed his frustrations from many years ago:
The filming process was a terrible experience for me. I had difficult partners and financiers who constantly pestered me. I knew I was creating something truly special, so I never accepted any compromises. However, at that time, they couldn’t comprehend the significance of what we were working on. You shoot, you edit, you piece it all together, and when you’re halfway there, everyone starts saying you’re moving too slowly. As a director, you have to learn to tune out the noise. Back then, I knew I was crafting something extraordinary, and now it has become one of the most influential science fiction films in history that others draw inspiration from. Every damn film.
Despite being a confident director, Ridley Scott still holds critics accountable for the initial lukewarm reception of “Blade Runner” in the 1980s:
I hadn’t watched “Blade Runner” in 20 years. But I just watched it. And it’s not slow at all. The film conveys original and intriguing ideas. It touches upon topics like bioengineering and the exploitation of the world’s resources. At that time, they dismissed it as nonsense. Well, I say: go to hell.
Just over a month later, on November 22, the premiere of “Napoleon” will take place, which is Ridley Scott’s latest project featuring Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role.
